Mayo Island’s Makeover: Richmond’s Bold Move for Urban Renewal

We are excited to share the news about Mayo Island’s recent acquisition by the City of
Richmond! After more than 40 years of anticipation, Mayo Island, nestled in the heart of the
James River, is set to undergo a transformation into a public park, enriching the outdoor
resources available to our community.

The acquisition, finalized in January, marks a significant milestone in Richmond’s journey toward
expanding its green spaces. With nearly $15 million invested in the purchase, supported by
grant programs totaling over half the cost, Mayo Island’s potential as a public asset is now within
reach. The endeavor reflects a collaborative effort between city planners, nonprofits, and the
community at large, highlighting the shared vision for a vibrant and accessible urban landscape.
As one of the last privately owned islands along the James River, Mayo Island’s history is as
rich as the river that surrounds it. From its origins as a strategic point for various endeavors to
its more recent role as a parking lot, Mayo Island’s story embodies the evolving relationship
between Richmond and its natural resources. With plans to remove asphalt and restore the
island to its natural state, we anticipate Mayo Island becoming a cherished sanctuary for
outdoor recreation.

At Hit Play, we’re honored to witness this historic moment and look forward to seeing Mayo
Island flourish as a dynamic public park, serving as a testament to Richmond’s commitment to
sustainable growth and community engagement. With Mayo Island’s transformation on the
horizon, we’re thrilled at the possibility of bringing our creative expertise to any potential events
held on the property!
